A Great Pit Stop

June 6, the Bowman family headed out for a week at Sunset Beach, NC. We were so excited but kind of sad that we were going to miss our church's preschool trip to the Greenville Zoo. We had been wanting to take Hunter and had been wondering how he would like the zoo. As we prepared for the beach trip, we remembered that we would be passing right by another zoo - Columbia, SC's Riverbanks Zoo! Although it is a little bigger than Greenville and it would take longer, we decided to try it out. We also thought this would be a great pit stop on our 5 1/2 hour journey to the beach. Since Columbia is not too far from Fort Mill, Mimi met us and toured the zoo with us. We had a great time, even if Hunter's favorite part was finding his "sticks!" :)

Hunter posed in front of the elephants. Hunter probably wondered why they didn't look gray like the ones in his books. Let's just say, these elephants have fun in the red clay! We told Hunter they needed a "bath," which he knew exactly what that was!
If only we would have been at the zoo a week later, we probably could have seen this gorilla jump out of his habitat and onto the path of the visitors!! We couldn't believe that happened so soon after we had just visited there! Daddy brought his camera into the zoo and was able to take many good pictures of the animals. These are just a few of the animals that we saw...
It was cute and sweet to see the daddy giraffe and his little baby giraffe together!
The giraffes would come so close and if you were lucky, they would even come close enough to eat food out of your hands that you could buy. This was the first time I have ever seen a giraffe's tongue! I had no idea that it was so long, black, and snake-like!
This baby lion was resting upclose for us to see!

Hunter was so happy that his Mimi came to meet us at the zoo! I bet he wonders how she just showed up there and then left when we did.
For some reason Daddy didn't want to squeeze into the tiny train and ride TWO laps for $6! Instead he was our official photographer. Hunter loves trains but I'm not sure he loved it enough to spend that much money to ride around a small lap twice.
After getting off of the train, Hunter showed us his new letter he has learned..."x"! The kid can spot and make an "x" with his arms anywhere these days! Of course we think he's a genius because he knows two letters now - "h" and "X"...haha! :)
Hunter was so excited because he found one of his favorites these days - a stick!
I guess we need to get a few zoo books for Hunter. We realized while we there that he knows SOO many more farm animals than zoo animals. I guess that is why he felt so right at home with the cow and goat!
We'll definitely have to go back to the zoo! I think we all had a great time and it was so good to have a pit stop almost exactly halfway to the beach!
